Beginning when we're young, friends are such an important part of our lives. Having friends validates us somehow; they teach us, shape us and define us. As I strive to model my life after Christ, I find that ever more so, I need the presence of friends, especially women, who are striving in this way too.
One of the most amazing aspects of sharing this Christian journey is that all along the path, you are never alone; there are always others on the road.
At times, you will see someone ahead of you. You can see their authentic and active relationship with Christ and they often leave you feeling inspired and anticipating the beautiful things they've shared are awaiting you ahead.
There will be some you will share road time with side-by-side. Like a great walking partner, these kindred spirits are in step with you, often affirming where you have been and encouraging you to continue. They breathe energy and new life into your journey.
Then there are the friends who are behind you. It is with these dear ones that a special privilege is opened up as you become the one in whom they see an authentic and active—though imperfect—relationship with Christ. With these sweet sisters you have the honor of encouraging them to strive for the beauty that is assuredly ahead.
I truly believe that God gives each of us special gifts and one He has given me is to speak loving truth and wisdom into the lives of others—especially women. I am often sought out for counsel and it is humbling to be trusted with their deepest concerns. I remember so many women who have allowed me to hear their most personal stories, intercede for them in prayer and encourage them to stay focused forward and persevere on the road.
This is a significant responsibility and one I do not take lightly. I know my words have life and can create motion in the life of the one who receives them and those around them. Relying on God—and always pointing them back to Him—is essential.
In recent weeks, God has gifted me with the presence of several new road friends. The first is a beautiful young woman seeking hard after God and has invited me to mentor her. What an awesome privilege! I have been so incredibly blessed by her presence in my life. She has sought out my counsel and given me permission to speak into her life. Beyond this, the times we spend together are sweet and deeply meaningful and I am receiving so much from her in return.
Then there is an amazing friend I have unexpectedly encountered right next to me on the road. From the instant we met, we felt this surprising immediate connection that is so deeply meaningful, so personal, so lovely and special that we know without a doubt that it has come directly from the hand of God. I believe that—knowing how much He uses me to speak into the lives of others—and thus helping to bear their burdens—God knew it was vital for me to have someone who fills me up, touches my heart, challenges me to strive and encourages me on the journey...and this special friend truly does—more than anyone I have ever met. What a precious gift.
And these are just a few of the dear ones I have encountered. One of my favorite scriptures from Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (NIV) speaks of friendship in this way: "Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up."

I have found this to be so incredibly true. It is a privilege to be one who helps another up and a very special blessing to be helped up by another. For all of the wonderful women who I have met...ahead of me, beside me and behind me...thank you. It's an honor to journey with you. I love you and I'll see you on the road!
